Strength In and From The Arms

Focused Matwork with Blossom

A lot is required of the body to move through the complete Pilates mat repertoire. Let’s see and feel how we can use our arm strength to access of the repertoire and our own bodies. Strength in the arms — the whole arm — is a necessary building block to set us up for success in the mat exercises. Strength from the arms helps us integrate and connect back into our body to create shapes and movement that reflects the wholeness of the body as a system. We will work through accessible variations of arm movements to build up to the more challenging Pilates mat exercises like Twist and High Bridge. Let’s explore work in the arms using small props like: hand weights and a towel.

Kathryn Ross-Nash

The Long and Short of it

This Mat class uses the weight Pole and the Long Pole to not only create a closed chain for the hands from the torso but also gives an awareness to your alignment, a place to create stability and strength through your midline and the opportunity to find and engage your body in a new way.

This class will incorporate the prone, seated, kneeling and standing position. Be ready to work, play, sweat and experience your work at another level!

The Fletcher Approach

The Fletcher approach to the Pilates method is both classical and evolved. Ron Fletcher began his studies with Joseph Pilates in 1948, following a knee injury, and continued his studies with Clara until he opened the first studio for Body Contology on west coast in 1971. Kyria Sabin initiated her 20-year study with Ron in 1991.

This workshop will introduce you to the unique Fletcher history and approach to the method, including an introduction to the Fletcher Percussive Breath, Fletcher Towelwork, Floorwork and Barrework techniques. You will learn how the Fletcher approach not only helps clarify the Pilates principles and roots, but also enables teachers to add creativity and variety to private sessions and group classes - both in studio and online - anywhere!

YOUR BIOTENSEGRITY BODY

Change the Context to Change Everything

Are you allowing your spine to “breathe” as you move, or treating your spine as something to “control”?
When we control ourselves, we run the risk of getting stuck in a perfectionistic, biomechanical, body image approach to movement and teaching. In this workshop, we will explore how to listen to the guidance of your innate biointelligent wisdom through the fascial matrix of your living architecture, the felt sense of your Biotensegrity Body, by learning to embody the embryonic tensional forces and gestures that shape us in the womb and support our movements throughout life.
• Experience and learn to embody your fascial elastic recoil breath as an access to whole body core coordination, internal organ toning and nervous system self-regulation
• Discover an effort with ease playful approach to the Pilates repertoire, creating a deeper access to the Basic movements and how they naturally flow into the Intermediate and Advanced movements
• Experience the power of the force transfer of your connective tissue fascial matrix as your legs and arms connect through your shoulder and pelvic girdles to your “breathing spine”

Brett Howard

Mastering Control on the Mat

Joseph Pilates referred to his method as the Art of Control. “Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit” Joseph Pilates (1945). In this workshop, tools are given to foster ways of attaining greater consistent control in Pilates. Participants learn various approaches of scaffolding and deconstructing the Pilates exercises, as well as learn how to recognize the skills involved in the exercises to strengthen those skills.

PILATES PLUS PSYCHE:

A life of dual development, Pilates and Yourself! They grow together.

Our “authority” comes from our depth of focus and work on where we have the most trouble with ourselves, our greatest area of undevelopment, frustration and even despair. Dealing our whole lives with that area is a creative and spiritual journey, totally worth the work. Each Pilates teacher and each Pilates client has the potential to be involved in this process. It is a natural process.
Our area of personal difficulty lies in the unconscious which is the larger part of each one of our psyches. The great Swiss physician/psychologist/ psychiatrist: Carl Gustav Jung’s work unlocked and made available the growing of our “Whole Selves.” Among his many discoveries of the human psyche, he uncovered and clarified the typological structure of the psyche, the “four ways” in which we learn and experience life: 1) Thinking, 2) Feeling, 3) Sensation (the body) and 4) Intuition.
It is how this typology is useful in the teaching and learning Pilates that I am sharing with you at this second Summit..

Brent Anderson

Distribution of movement

equals Distribution of Force

Pilates, according to Anderson is one of the most effective movement environments to increase the quality and distribution of movement. Today, sedentarism is killing the world and often referred to as the “New Smoking”. Discover specific tools inside of the Pilates repertoire that can negate the effects of sitting. This workshop will also teach how to identify quality of movement and where new movement can be achieved, while distributing potentially harmful forces in the spine and extremities that can lead to degeneration, injuries, and pain.

Objectives: Following this virtual workshop, participants will

Understand the power associated with segmental movement with heightened attention to quality.
Learn how to identify segmental movement of the spine and the importance of discovering mobility in the upper lumbar, thoracic, hip extension and ankle dorsi-flexion.
Learn how increased mobility in other parts of the body can greatly reduce forces in areas that are subject to degeneration and injury like the lumbar, knees, cervical and shoulders.
Learn how to apply this knowledge to an ever-increasing sedentary population and how to impact the client’s lifestyle with home programs to influence heightened mobility in daily movement strategies.

Vintage Pilates Fundamentals -

what I learned from Jay Grimes.

In this two-hour workshop Sandy Shimoda will introduce fundamental concepts that she learned from Jay Grimes, who learned them from Joe Pilates. These concepts compliment everything you know about the exercises and encourage you to look deeper. To really understand Contrology, you have to feel it at work in your body, so please be prepared to workout with us.

The topics we will briefly cover are:
a. The lost Principle of Pilates – MOVE!
b. How to build and maintain a healthy spine
c. How to move with control
d. Learning to connect your Center

Compare & Contrast

A Universal Reformer Master Class

Do you ever get frustrated when your Client’s body placement on the Apparatus, or the Apparatus setup itself, just doesn’t seem to work? Are you curious how the Pilates Elders taught certain Reformer exercises? Did you know that Carola Trier introduced sitting in front of the Short Box for Stomach Massage and Romana had her advanced clients perched high up on their tippy toes for Long Stretch? Kathy Grant is famous for “breaking down” very complex Reformer exercises into 3-4 simpler components, gradually building the movement sequences up, to achieve the full bodied, Classic versions.
Jillian studied or worked with many of the 1st Generation Teachers now lost to us. A true “Hybrid of the Masters,”she has been teaching Pilates since 1981. Over the years, Jillian has evolved her own unique Teaching Style and she is most eager to share her inspiration with YOU! Spend 90 dynamic minutes with her, and acquire exciting new teaching skills & “know-how.” Please come to this class warmed up and prepared to move. (If you don’t have a Reformer, observe Class, take notes & practice later)

Michael King

PILATES POLE & TOWEL

Join Michael in this creative class where we look at using the Long Pole & Towel in a Pilates Class. These cost-effective tools have become very popular as they perfect tools to both help and challenges the clients through the movements but the size of the Pole allows different adaptions of the movements. Using the Long Pole in standing work is a great balance tool aid as well as alignment tool but the short pole offers a different selection of movements when you are down in both prone and supine positions. Michael will use his creative movements in a preparation section as well as the closing section of a class showing how versatile this prop is throughout the whole class. Also with your chair classes bring the pole in as motivation and proprioceptive tool. If you do not have a Pilates Pole at home you can use a broomstick A standard length bath towel is ideal but not so thick that when rolled up you cannot grasp it in your hands.

Support through arms and shoulders

In your Pilates practice, as in life, you use your arms and shoulders in a variety of ways. You reach, pull, push, hang and support, to name a few. Whatever movement pattern you do the balance between stability and mobility is crucial in order to perform these of movements safely. In this workshop Michael and Ton will focus on the way we use our shoulders and arms as our base of support during our Pilates exercises, for example during the Leg pull, Pull up or Elephant. We will quickly review the basic anatomy of the shoulders and arms using the concepts of Spiraldynamik® and then delve into exercises which will help you create proper support throughout your Pilates practice. Experience how you can improve your Pilates exercises through correct alignment of the scapula, humerus, ulna, radius and the dome of your hand.

Specific things you will learn:
New exercises that you will be able to incorporate immediately into your practice
Basic understanding of the spirals of the arms and shoulders
How we can use the spirals of the arms and scapula to make your Pilates exercises more effective

THE ART OF ASYMMETRICAL EXERCISE

on the Cadillac, Reformer and Mat

Muscle imbalances need to be addressed asymmetrically in order to create balance and symmetry. Everything from the way we stand, lift and carry affects this asymmetry. This course teaches assessment of hyper-mobility and rigidity and how to correct muscle imbalances. Exercises will be presented to balance the body with a variety of patterns and sequences integrating movement for the whole body. This concept teaches us how to adapt the work for the individual in order to teach every level of fitness.

2020 Evolution:

Teaching Pilates with new perceptions - Live event

Perception, reality, communication, action. The actions we take are based on what we experience and perceive. For movement teachers, we are wired to think via movement, via connection and via our ability to think, feel and sense with a fine-tuned awareness. However, for many of our clients, that awareness is less obvious.

In this workshop, Madeline Black will teach you how to create physical change even when you are not physically present with someone.

Experience how to see a client’s movement strategy in 2D, interpret it and guide the client toward a felt sense of the movement to make the shift you offer. Become aware of the novel sensory perceptions in your practice and trust your own perceptions.

Learn about sensory perception in teaching Pilates and how yours has evolved
Practice new skills to assess movement in 2D environment
Discover how to translate what you see through the screen to the client for effective movement shifts toward improved performance
Tuning into your own perceptions
Connecting with the client that meets them at a place where it is most effective for them to sense their body
Experience a live movement class led by Madeline
Real time for answering questions and sharing ideas

Madeline will be live for both presenting and Q & A.
