Brett Howard

BIO

Brett Howard is the Director of Education of the United States Pilates Association™ and a Senior Teacher of Teacher of the Teacher Certification Program. He is the Director of Education of the Classic Pilates Institute in South Korea. He is an Owner and Director of the Pilates Studio the Pilates Haus.

Brett Howard was certified by the New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification Program under the tutelage of Romana Kryzanowska in 1998. He has trained extensively with Pilates Elders Mary Bowen, Jay Grimes and Lolita San Miguel, as well as Master Teachers Bob Liekens, Sari Mejia Santo, Kathy Corey, Carey Regan, Blossom Crawford, Deborah Lessen and Steve Giordano. He is a PMA Certified Pilates Teacher. He is a co- author of the book Pilates for Children and Adolescents and a contributing essay author of the book Voices of Classical Pilates. He is featured in the Pilates book, The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning and has appeared and contributed articles in Pilates Style Magazine. He is a "Distinguished Instructor" and “Legacy Curator” on Pilates Anytime and is an Instructor on Pilatesology, both are global online Pilates Studios, created for people all over the world to explore Pilates with highly skilled, well-trained instructors.

Brett Howard has taught workshops all around the United States as well as Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, England, Finland, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland. He has created a Pilates curriculum for children that can be implemented in schools as well as the private sector.

Brett Howard holds a M.A. in Dance Education from New York University Steinhardt School of Education, Culture and Human Development and a B.F.A. in Dance from S.U.N.Y. Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. He has done a large amount of coursework in Anatomy and Biomechanics, training under Irene Dowd and Lynn Martin.

Brett Howard has danced for the Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company, Mary Seidman and Dancers, Stephan Koplowitz, Tarin Chaplin, Hemiko Minota, Renata Celichowska, Susan Koff and the Faun Dance Troupe. He is the Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Dance Company Brett Howard and Company, which he founded in 2001.Brett Howard is the Director of Education of the United States Pilates Association™ and a Senior Teacher of Teacher of the Teacher Certification Program. Kathy Corey

BIO

Kathy Corey is a Master Teacher who began her career with the Pilates Technique in 1979. She has been the leading expert in the Pilates community for over 40 years. She is the Director of Kathy Corey Pilates. Kathy Corey Pilates Programs are taught at locations across the United States and in over 30 countries worldwide. In 2004, she designed the innovative CORE Band™, which is used in studios around the world. The Core Band™ Mat Class is recognized as an enhancement to the traditional mat exercises.

Kathy Corey Pilates offers a progressive and in-depth educational experience through many levels of training. The Comprehensive Certification Program provides a full education of the Pilates repertoire. The KCP Mentor Program is a highly selective program designed for teachers who are already certified and have been teaching for at least five years. Her C.A.R.E.S. – Cancer Awareness and Recovery Exercise System – is a state of the art Pilates program for a variety of treatments and conditions to help people in their breast cancer recovery – in mind, body, and spirit.

She is on the Contributing Editor Board for IDEA Pilates Today and is an IDEA Expert. She has been selected by IDEA as one of ten people in the world “Who Inspire the World to Fitness,” the fitness industry’s highest form of recognition.
Kathy Corey is an Advisory Board Member for Pilates Style Magazine. She is a “Distinguished Instructor” for PilatesAnytime, a global Pilates Studio, created for people all over the world to explore Pilates with highly skilled, well-trained instructors.

Corey is a PMA Pilates Gold Certified Teacher and a PMA CEC provider. She is a member of the PMA Presenters Committee for the 2016 Conference.

In 2013, Corey received the first Plaque of Appreciation from Pilates in Asia for her outstanding performance and contribution to the growth of Pilates. In 2014, she was appointed as the President of the International Education Committee for Pilates in Asia.

Kathy Corey has accepted the position of President of the World Pilates Confederation. The WPC is a European based Pilates organization for the inclusion and support of the Pilates Method of all countries, all schools and all generations of pilates. The purpose of the organization is to promote quality education and promote global unity.

Master Teacher Kathy Corey received the honor of becoming the President and Director of the International Pilates Heritage Congress held in Joseph Pilates hometown, Monchengladbach, Germany, which is known as the most prestigious International Pilates Congress in the world.

Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle

Wendy is an International leader in embodied movement, with a 40 year background in holistic health, and lifelong studies and collaborations with distinguished pioneers in yoga, Pilates, Structural Integration bodywork, somatic arts and sciences, dynamic breathwork and energy medicine.

As Director of Pilates Center of Austin for the past 28 years, Wendy studied originally with Romana Kryzanowska and then with Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen and Lolita San Miguel…Pilates Elders who studied directly with Joseph Pilates. She has been deeply inspired by the diversity of their teaching expressions. Additionally, her extensive yoga background, along with studies with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Emilie Conrad, Susan Harper, Judith Aston, Tom Myers, The Guild for Structural Integration, Hubert Godard, Carl Stough, Phillip Beach and Jaap van der Wal, with profound breath, fascial biotensegrity, embryology and ontological studies, empowered Wendy to cultivate her own “biointelligent” voice.

Michael & Ton

BIO

Michael originally hails from Minneapolis, MN, USA, while Ton was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They are one of those rare couples that are together 24/7. They met in the late 80’s living in Vienna, Austria while performing in a production of Cats. They were in the same dressing room and friendly, but neither of them were interested in anything more than being friends/colleagues at that time. It wasn’t until 1991 while living in Zürich, Switzerland performing in yet another production of Cats that their friendship turned into a relationship.
Life moved on, as it inevitably does for all of us, and they found themselves in New York desiring a break from life in the theatre. Familiar with the Pilates method, having been introduced to it as performers in the 1980s, they found themselves at Drago’s Gym at 50 West 57 Street in NYC. It was here that they met Romana Kryzanowska for the first time. They immediately embarked on an apprenticeship with Romana with the aim of becoming teachers. No manuals, no workshops, no hour counts. No, Romana took them under her wing and taught them organically from her own great knowledge and intuition, the way Joe had taught her. She made it very clear from the start that she would declare them as ready to teach when she decided that they truly were. After a year of daily sessions, assisting and teaching along side Romana; and ending everyday with “question and answer” time, she told them they were ready to test out. M & T both speak of this time with great affection, punctuating the significance that time had in their lives.
After becoming certified M & T started to teach at the Pilates Studio in NYC at 2121 Broadway in NYC. The studio was owned by Sean Gallagher who was the Director of Pilates, Inc. for which Romana was the Master Instructor. At this time apprentices divided their hours between Drago’s Gym and the Pilates Studio of NYC. The Pilates Studio was also connected to Performing Arts Physical Therapy and it was during this time that M & T first started to work with Physical Therapists to incorporate Pilates into a patients physical therapy. Their clientele at the studio included many celebrities (Julianna Margulies, Donald Sutherland, Roberta Flack, Phylicia Rashad to name a few). They even created a special warm-up for the Broadway cast of The Lion King which they taught every week at the theatre on 42nd street.
When Bob Liekens left his position as Teacher Trainer at the Pilates Studio to work for Power Pilates, Romana asked “the boys” as she always called them, to take over and become Teacher Trainers. Of course they were flattered and honored by her request so they started their second Pilates apprenticeship with Romana to become Teacher Trainers. It was during their test out to become Teacher Trainers that Romana first put them together to teach as a team. As Teacher Trainers and Supervising Instructors at the uptown Pilates Studio in NYC, M & T worked closely together with Romana and her daughter Sari Mejia Santo, training, guiding and testing hundreds of apprentices through the program.
In 2003 Romana split from Pilates, Inc. to start her own organization Romana’s Pilates. M & T decided they did not want to be a part of any organization and wanted to become independent. Although the decision was not an easy one for them, it was an organic one. They had arrived at a point in their Pilates careers that they felt belonging to and just teaching the curriculum of an organization was too restrictive. During their time with Romana they had continued to study with different teachers, Pilates Elders, healers and other forms of movement including Chinese Meridian Exercises, Yoga and more in-depth anatomy. M & T wanted to utilize all of their knowledge and experience. So they began to pursue their own path. They continued to teach their clients as freelance teachers in NYC, worked for various non-profit organizations like Share an organization for women with breast and ovarian cancer, and developed and created the TRIADBALLTM and TRIADBALL manual. It didn’t take long before they were asked to present workshops at studios and conventions worldwide. This led to eventually being asked to consult and help set up independently owned and run certification programs in Norway, Austria, Portugal, England, The Netherlands and Costa Rica.

Phoenix, AZ is now their home base and their clientele includes professional athletes from the NFL and MLB. Michael and Ton are currently in their advanced studies of Spiraldynamik® based out of Switzerland.

Kathryn Ross-Nash

BIO

Kathryn Ross-Nash. Author, Model, Photographer & Lover of the Pilates Method.

Kathryn began her Classical Pilates training in 1982 and has had the privilege to study with First Generation teachers Romana Kryzanowska, Kathy Grant, Sari Mejia Santo, Jay Grimes and Edwina Fontaine. She is trained through the Pilates Studio, Romana’s Pilates, Authentic Pilates, the Pilates Method Alliance, a Guild Certified Feldenkras Practitioner, and through the National Pilates Certification Program. She was a principle dancer for ten years with Ballet Hispanico of NY, where she now sits on the Board of Directors. Kathryn holds a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and an undefeated AUU sparring record.

Kathryn worked closely with Romana for many years. Romana named her founding Vice- President to her Presidency of the Authentic Pilates Guild. Kathryn often traveled and demonstrated the work for Romana during her workshops. She is the only woman to demonstrate on both the Romana’s Pilates Mat DVDs, she is the voice and teacher of the individual follow along Mat workouts and the Legacy Series DVDs. Romana is quoted about Ms. Ross-Nash, saying “her work is like ice cream”, “poetry in motion” and “she is one of her best”- Romana’s “Star of Stars.”

Kathryn appeared with Romana multiple in Pilates Style Magazine. She can be found on her own Vimeo site, Pilatesology and Pilates Anytime. She was featured instructor in the premiere issue of Pilates Style and has been featured in the magazine many times since, served a writer for it’s blog, magazine and currently sits on the Advisory Board. She is an often-quoted expert whose advice on the method and it’s authenticity is sought after worldwide. To celebrate her 55th Birthday she had the honor to grace the cover of Pilates Style Magazine as the oldest single cover model in their history. With this cover, which included a ten page spread featuring her work “The Red Thread®”. Along with her daughter, Zoe Ross-Nash, this cover kicked off the campaign #donttouchme, encouraging others to embrace their authentic self and shed the use of filters and photo shop alterations.

Mary will explain the practical tool of Jungian Typology in the teaching and learning of Pilates and/or everything else!!

Mary has 45 years of teaching Pilates under her since 1975 and ongoing, and also 50 years of practicing as a Jungian Psychoanalyst since 1970 and ongoing. She kept the two professions separate for 20 years until one day witnessing a Pilates client in dire distress she intervened to explain to the client a way to understand what she was feeling, to help her to see what was natural in her reaction at the time. Being overheard by others nearby in the studio, from that time on everyone wanted both sides of Mary. PILATES PLUS PSYCHE was born that day in 1995 and introduced to the PMA in 2000. PILATES PLUS PSYCHE is now a 25 year old established part of the Pilates worldwide community. It addresses the whole person in the learning and teaching of Pilates, both the conscious and the unconscious mainly using the practical tool of Jungian Typology to understand why for the teacher and for the client certain things are simple and easy and others impossibly difficult. The answer to that lies in one’s typology.

During the workshop questions can be asked and nothing that Mary teaches is ever set in stone. Her unique approcha has her teach creatively, each time differently from her spirit and the spontaneity of the occasion. Lolita San Miguel

BIO

New York born Lolita San Miguel celebrated in 2014 her 56th anniversary of practicing the Pilates method. She received her first certification from Carola Trier, Joseph Pilates’ first disciple to open a studio and then studied with Mr. Pilates himself. Lolita holds the distinction of being one of the only two known practitioners to have been officially certified by Joseph and Clara Pilates and awarded degrees by the State University of New York to teach the Pilates Method. Lolita has also been certified by Polestar Pilates Education and was awarded a Gold Certificate by the Pilates Method Alliance. She is one of the four “Distinguished Elders” of the Pilates Method Alliance. After a distinguished career in dance–she was a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet for over ten years and ballet mistress for Ballet Hispanico for three years—Ms. San Miguel moved with her husband to Puerto Rico in 1977, where she founded Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico–now Puerto Rico’s finest ballet company– and was its Artistic and Executive Director for 27 years. She also founded Pilates y Mas, Inc. in Puerto Rico in 2000 to teach, train and certify teachers in association with Polestar Pilates Education. Ms. San Miguel retired from Ballet Concierto in 2005 and at the age of 70 started a new career, dedicated to the teaching of the Pilates Method. In 2009, she started her successful Pilates Master Mentor Program (PMMP), which has graduated an international group of over 120 teachers from the six habitable continents.

While holding a PMMP session in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2009, Ms. San Miguel decided to celebrate the international “Pilates Day” by offering free Pilates classes to over 150 persons in the King Frederick the Great Hall in the town of Monchengladbach, where Joseph Pilates was born and 20 minutes by car from Dusseldorf. She was shocked and sad to discover that no one knew about Joseph Pilates in the town of his birth. Right there and then she made it her mission to erect a Memorial Plaque honoring her teacher in his home town. On May 7, 2011, after two years of effort and a successful fund raising campaign, Ms. San Miguel accomplished her goal and a Memorial Plaque was placed under a linden tree, exactly where once stood the house where Joseph Pilates was born on December 9, 1883: 20 Waldenhauser Strasse. To further celebrate the occasion, she organized an international Pilates conference in Monchengladbach which was attended by Pilates aficionados from all over the world - Japan, Australia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, the U.K. and of course the U.S. Present were 31 of Ms. San Miguel’s PMMP graduates.

In the fall of 2011 Ms. San Miguel took another bold step. For years she had turned down requests to start her own Pilates teaching training program. But realizing that she now had a strong base of Pilates professionals with a solid knowledge of her methodology and approach to the Pilates Method she had trained personally through her Pilates Master Mentor Program—who called themselves “Lolita’s Disciples”—she felt motivated enough and decided that she would design her own teacher training program and started work on its preparation. The result is Lolita’s Legacy™, which was officially introduced at the 2012 Pilates Method Alliance conference in Las Vegas.

Blossom Leilani Crawford

BIO

Blossom Leilani Crawford is the owner and director of Bridge Pilates in Brooklyn, New York. She is known for her playful and powerful teaching methods, which she developed during the seventeen years she worked with Pilates Elder Kathleen Stanford Grant. Since then, Blossom has made it her mission to expose each one of her students to the joy and satisfaction that comes from intelligent exercise.

Blossom had the good fortune to be introduced to Pilates by Kathy Grant in 1993, during her first year as a dance student at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. A venerated teacher, Kathy was one of only two people to personally receive her Pilates teaching certification from Joseph Pilates himself. Blossom was impressed by the effect that Kathy's exacting and intuitive approach to Pilates had on maintaining and healing her body, and continued to study with her throughout her rigorous dance program.

After three years of working with Kathy, Blossom became her Teaching Assistant at NYU, an honored position that she held for over a decade (1996-2007). With Kathy's encouragement, Blossom went on to pursue private study with Pilates Elder Romana Kryzanoyska. She received her Pilates teaching certification in 1999, after six hundred hours of practice and observation.

Blossom's current work is a blend of her own considerable experience, Romana's more traditional set of training methods, and Kathy's flexible and demanding style. She is known for her ability to seamlessly integrate Pilates lineages as the situation demands, and for her insight into Kathy's work. The diverse stylistic approaches Blossom can access on the spot has made her a sought after Pilates instructor at conferences throughout the United States and abroad.

In January of 2006, Blossom opened Bridge Pilates to ensure a space where all styles of Pilates are present and honored, as Kathy had always taught her. In addition to teaching private sessions, workshops, and conferences, Blossom is a faculty member at Mark Morris Dance Center in downtown Brooklyn, where her vigorous group mat classes are open to the community. Most importantly, Blossom is the fiercely proud mother of two children-which means balancing the career she loves with her desire to get dinner on the table in time!

Miguel Silva

BIO

Born in the city of Porto, Portugal, Miguel da Silva inherited early age his father’s taste for physical activity.
He practiced many sports including handball, basketball, football, field hockey, cycling, swimming, surfing.
All this interest in varied physical activity, led him to the conclusion that - "everyone has a different body and different needs".

During his two years in the UK, Miguel started the practice of Yoga, increasing his
interests in the body with an entirely different concept from his regular fitness regime.
When back in Portugal, Miguel began his studies in Alternative Medicine, specializing in Shiatsu, Japanese massage technique, then later settled in Seville, Spain, perfecting the technique.

This is where he first experienced the Pilates Method.
Miguel suffered from back pain due to his posture and muscle tightness, which limited
the practice his favourite sport, surfing.

Through the practice of Pilates, he has improved his surfing and practically eliminated
the consistent pain in his lower back and gave him flexibility.
With his curiosity of the Pilates Method and its depth, this then led to several courses and workshops.
He then met, Fabien Menegon (Romana Kryzanowska's lineage), of the Spanish School of Authentic Pilates, and successfully completed his training with flying colours.

Following this, Fabien invited him to be part of the Spanish School of Authentic Pilates training program and help him to expand the brand.

Miguel is very passionate about Pilates, a respected member of the industry, owner of The Uno Pilates Studio - teaching director and master trainer.
